Maj Gen VK Bhatt, a veteran with 45 years of versatile experience, postgraduate in Environmental Science and Power systems (Electrical Engineering) from Poona University and Post graduate diploma (hons) in Environmental Management from Griffith University, Australia, is an Environmental Expert & adventure enthusiast. He was The Commandant The Bombay Sappers, and The Colonel Commandant The Bombay Sappers (2009- 2012).
From 2012 to 2017, he was adviser Punjab Covernment on environmental matters. In 2002 he published a study on management of water pollution and restoration of Mula & Mutha river systems. In 1998 he led the second scientific expedition to Panchchuli peaks to carry out Environmental study for first time in this remote Darma Valley. The team submitted a 129-page Report with recommendations.
A 19 minutes Movie was also made & broadcasted in National Channels. In 1998, in an exhibition in WWF(I), he displayed garbage brought back from the mountains for spreading awareness among the youth. The team submitted two reports on Ecological and Scientific status of Darma valley during the pre and post monsoon of 1998. Twelve scientists from various National Institutes participated in the study.
In 1993, he led Leader Scientific & Ecological Expedition to the Nanda – Devi Biosphere Reserve sponsored by Ministry of Environment & Forest. In above expedition brought back 1300kgs of garbage from various camps of Nanda Devi main peak & burnt 1200 kgs at base camp. Also found & brought back remnants of nuclear device lost in the biosphere reserve in 1978. In addition, the scientific team undertook benchmark studies in The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, and submitted a comprehensive report to The Ministry of Environment and Forest in July 1993. The Doordarshan TV also produced a 67 minutes film on the expedition, which was telecast on National Networks a number of times.
